Modernist Abstract Oil, David Rockefeller Estate ---- Signed lower right, 'Max Gunther' (German, 1934-1974); additionally signed verso, dated 1958 and titled 'Cité Décomposée'. Provenance: Estate of David Rockefeller. Old collection label and stamp verso for David and Peggy Rockefeller. Rockefeller Collection accession number, DR.2149, on original accession label verso. Displayed in the original ebony stained and giltwood frame with canvas liner. Framed Dimensions: 18.5 H x 22.5 W x 2 D Inches Born in Switzerland, Max Gunther first studied in Zurich and, subsequently, in Paris. He also lived and exhibited in both Scandinavia and London before settling in Italy. After 1953, he lived in Rome, traveling frequently to exhibitions of his work throughout Europe and the United States. Gunther exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. He is listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit's Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs. Reference: E.
