About the Item

This striking piece from Melisa Taylor Metzger’s Turbulences series exemplifies her evolving experimentation with surface, depth, and process. Pushing further into sculptural territory, Metzger incorporates thick impasto textures, creating a terrain that feels simultaneously ruptured and preserved. A dense vertical striation—her signature grid—anchors the composition, while swathes of metallic blue and graphite black ripple across the surface like weather systems caught in suspension. Allusions to cuts, burns, and accretions scar the work, suggesting forces of both violence and repair. An iridescent quality emerges depending on the angle of viewing and direction of light shining on the surface. This confers to the work an ethereal and dynamic presence. These marks are not just aesthetic—they evoke the pressure of contemporary events, from ecological instability to fractured communication. Rooted in a post-graffiti ethos, the piece transforms gestures of marking and erasure into enduring inscriptions. What might initially read as abstraction reveals, upon closer look an archaeology of impact. Through its material complexity, the work resonates as a monument to resilience in the face of ongoing turbulence—visceral, persistent, and unresolved. The works comes signed at the back and ready-to-hang with light grey edges. About artist: In Melisa Taylor’s work, the natural world acts as blueprint while ideas are sourced from historical art and contemporary culture. She pursued studies in Marine Biology before training in classical art of the Old Masters. She grew fascinated by the works of Flemish painters Vermeer and Rembrandt whose symbolic use of light influences her practice up to this day. Melisa explores the notion of the sublime through blur and precision. She develops an aesthetic of duality by hybridizing divergent approaches to art. Her studio practice is labor-intensive; various instruments and electric tools are used out-of-context to inject unpredictability in the painting gesture. She has assimilated to her visual language an eclectic multilayering process combining pyrography, sanding and detailed stencil compositions on wood. Embracing chance is a central idea in her work, equally so is meticulous control. This results in a subterranean tension that jeopardizes the ethereal appearance of her pieces; arbitrariness and mechanical execution fuse to create what she calls "systèmes faillibles" where spectral motifs seek to emerge out of obscuring lattices. Her work has been exhibited internationally and acquired in private and corporate collections across North America, Europe and Asia.
