This contemporary abstract expressionist woman’s portrait, titled “Beneath the Brim,” was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot and belongs to her ongoing series dedicated to Women.
This artwork explores feminine presence, introspection, and inner resilience through bold color, layered textures, and instinctive movement. The woman, partly concealed beneath a wide-brimmed hat, embodies both mystery and power — a symbolic act of self-protection and self-definition. The hat becomes a quiet barrier between her private emotional world and the outside gaze, while her steady expression reveals courage and vulnerability intertwined.
Dynamic brushstrokes and radiant tones of red, terracotta, and gold animate her features, creating a subtle glow against the vivid turquoise background. The intuitive, expressive gesture and spontaneous application of paint emphasize raw emotion over realism, honoring inner truth rather than external perfection.
“I paint women not as society sees them, but as they feel themselves — layered, luminous, and full of unspoken strength.” — Natalya Mougenot
“The hat here becomes a quiet shield — not to hide weakness, but to protect a sacred inner world.” — Natalya Mougenot
Authenticity lies at the heart of this piece. Natalya’s work reflects her belief that true emotional honesty is rare and precious in a world where we often perform roles and hide parts of ourselves. This portrait becomes a quiet rebellion — a celebration of being real, unapologetically.
“I believe authenticity in art — and in life — is essential. Today we are often expected to play roles, to hide, to pretend. Through my paintings, I return to what is real.” — Natalya Mougenot
“In each woman I paint, there is an inner flame. My work is simply to let it be seen.” — Natalya Mougenot
“Beneath the Brim” invites viewers into a contemplative moment where identity is self-defined, emotions are honored, and quiet strength radiates with honesty and grace.
