Collage, mixed technique - Work on paper Black frame with glass pane - dimension with frame 75.3 x 93.2 x 3.7 cm This striking mixed-media work on paper, signed R.P.J. and dated 1987, presents an imaginative architectural landscape constructed through a combination of gouache, watercolor and collage. The composition transforms an urban environment into a rhythmic arrangement of geometric forms. Houses, rooftops, arches, windows and walls overlap one another in a deliberately flattened perspective, creating an imaginary cityscape in which architecture becomes almost abstract. A restrained yet distinctive palette of burgundy red, pale blue, ochre, cream, black and white reinforces the graphic quality of the composition. Strong dark outlines define the architectural elements, while circles, rectangles, arches and sharply angled roofs establish a playful dialogue between figurative representation and geometric abstraction. The use of collage introduces subtle variations of texture and surface, contrasting with the areas of gouache and watercolor and giving the work an additional sense of depth despite its intentionally flattened construction. Created in 1987, the work reflects the renewed interest in bold geometry, simplified architectural forms and graphic color combinations characteristic of late 20th-century European decorative and Postmodern aesthetics. Both architectural and imaginative, the composition has a particularly strong decorative presence and would work equally well in a Modernist, Postmodern or contemporary interior.
