About the Item

Latin American School Abstract Color Field - Van Dyke Brown with Cyanotype on Paper Latin American School abstract piece in the style of Rothko by California-based artist, Ricardo de Silva (American/Brazil, 20th C.) Cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown are mixed and overlaid to create deep blues, browns, and greens. Cyanotype and Van Dyke brown are both printing processes where UV-sensitive chemicals are applied to paper or other surfaces and then selectively covered and exposed to UV light in order to produce a printed image. However, as evidenced in this piece, these processes can also be used to create images more similar to a painting, wherein the chemicals are overlapped and unevenly layered and then exposed to UV light in order to create different colors and opacity. Unsigned but acquired with a collection of the artists work. Paper size: 11.5" H x 7" W Frame size: 15.88" H x 10.82" W From a collection of Ricardo de Silva's work and memorabilia. DeSilva was born in Brazil and grew up in Los Angeles. He was a gallery owner, first in Santa Barbara in the 1960's and 70's, then in San Jose in the 1980's. He was dedicated to promoting the work of talented upcoming artists, including Kogyo and Hasui Kiyochika, Robert Frame, Jim Stuckenberg, Alice Robertson Carr, Deborah Eve Alastra, Russell Kelly, and Diana Mark.

Untitled (Work on Paper) - vibrant, modernist abstract, mixed media on paper

By Otto Rogers

The vibrant colours—burnt orange, turquoise, black-a touch of green and the dynamic form of this inspired composition is quintessentially Otto Rogers. The modernist artist was masterful in his use of acrylic paints and his work reflected the natural beauty that surrounded his country studio. Saskatchewan born Rogers (1935-2019) was recognized by the NY art critic, Clement Greenberg as a ‘big attack’ painter early in his career and stated that his artwork showed a ‘fullness of inspiration.’ A devout follower of the Baha’i faith, Rogers did not view art as simply a ‘decorative thing.’ “Nature is God...
