More about SERENA BOCCHINO Serena Bocchino is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersection of abstraction and expressionism through painting, sculpture, installation, film, and live performance. With a distinct focus on music and movement, her work is rooted in synesthesia—the sensory experience through which she perceives sound as color, rhythm, movement, and form. Through energetic gesture, layered color, and performative mark-making, Bocchino translates music into a dynamic visual language. Since emerging in New York’s East Village art scene in the 1980s, Bocchino has presented her work internationally in solo and group exhibitions. Her numerous awards and honors include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a PS1/MoMA International Studio Residency, Art Matters, the Basil H. Alkazzi Award USA, and Fellowships in both Painting and Drawing from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. From 2019 to 2020, she was commissioned by NJ TRANSIT and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts to create four public art installations for Newark Penn Station. In 2021, Bocchino was awarded an artist residency at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, Wyoming, where she created a monumental site-specific suspended sculpture for INFLUENCE, a ten-year survey of her work. The exhibition also included HEROES: Women Artists Who Influence and Inspire, a project, exhibition, and publication honoring 37 women artists. Subsequent exhibitions include presentations at the Museo Italo Americano in San Francisco in 2022, James Bacchi Contemporary in Palm Springs in 2023, and a solo exhibition curated by Joseph Knight at Ivy Brown Gallery in New York in 2023. In 2025, Bocchino exhibited with Korean artist Yoo Choong Mok at AP SPACE in Chelsea, New York. The exhibition expanded into a collaborative dance performance that brought together the artists’ distinct visual languages and cultural perspectives through movement, wearable art, and Bocchino’s printed silk veils. Bocchino’s interdisciplinary practice includes collaborations with musical ensembles ranging from jazz groups and opera singers to chamber musicians and symphony orchestras. In 2026, she performed live with the New Jersey Symphony, creating two paintings in direct response to the concert. Her gestures, physical movements, and visual energy unfolded in real time through a synesthetic process that allows her to see and interpret the music. Presented in conjunction with the performance was Bocchino’s solo exhibition, A Night of Pure Imagination. The exhibition featured paintings and sculptures from her evolving butterfly and wings series, including Winged Rhapsody, a suspended sculpture extending into the architectural space above the gallery. Several weeks later, a video documenting the New Jersey Symphony collaboration was presented every hour for 24 hours on a large-scale digital billboard in Times Square. Bocchino’s studio practice has also been documented in several films. Most recently, Rhythm Pulse, directed by Richard Cooperman, was screened in conjunction with her two-person exhibition at AP SPACE. The short documentary examines Bocchino’s synesthetic process and its influence on her paintings, while interviews with artists and art-world professionals provide insight into the development and significance of her work. Rhythm Pulse has received more than 25 awards and honors from international film festivals. Bocchino’s work is held in more than 50 museums, public, and corporate collections and in over 200 private collections worldwide.
