About the Item

Title: Mid Century French Linear Geometric Abstract Drawing in Black Ink on Paper by Serge Guerin (b. 1916), French Ink on artists paper, unframed Size: 25.75 (height) x 19.75 (width) inches Provenance: private collection, Paris, France Condition: good overall; light age-related toning to paper, a few faint surface marks and soft corner wear consistent with age. Image clean and well-preserved. Description: This refined mid-century French abstract drawing by Serge Guerin (b. 1916) showcases the artist’s meticulous command of line, rhythm, and proportion. Executed in fine black ink on textured paper, the work features a lattice-like arrangement of intersecting arcs and verticals, forming an intricate geometric web that appears both architectural and ethereal. The clean precision of Guerin’s linework, coupled with the elegant symmetry of the composition, gives the piece a meditative, almost musical quality—each curve and axis delicately balanced to create a sense of visual harmony and tension. Guerin’s artistic style bridges geometric abstraction and modernist minimalism, reflecting the influence of mid-20th-century design and the Parisian avant-garde. His work shares affinities with the Constructivist and Op Art movements, yet retains a distinct sensitivity and organic rhythm. The deliberate use of negative space accentuates the fragility and grace of the linear structure, inviting the viewer to explore the balance between order and fluidity. This drawing exemplifies Guerin’s ongoing exploration of structure and motion within a restrained monochrome palette. Its subtle interplay of precision and spontaneity makes it a timeless choice for collectors drawn to modern French abstraction, mid century graphic art, or architectural line compositions. The piece would sit beautifully within both contemporary and minimalist interiors, either framed simply in black or floated within a shadow mount to emphasize its crisp geometry. From the artist’s estate, this work stands as a testament to Guerin’s refined sense of form and balance.

Title: Mid Century French Architectural Abstract Ink Drawing Signed SG by Serge Guerin (b. 1916), French signed lower right “SG”, name stamped verso Ink on artists paper, unframed Size: 19.75 (height) x 25.75 (width) inches Provenance: private collection, Paris, France Condition: overall good and sound; faint age toning and minor edge wear consistent with age; ink surface crisp and well preserved. Description: An intricate and refined mid-century ink drawing by French artist Serge Guerin (b.1916), whose work epitomises the elegance and precision of post-war geometric abstraction. Executed in black ink on textured artists paper, this composition features a network of tall, spire-like forms interconnected by fine linear structures. The result is an architectural composition that conveys rhythm, balance, and tension — a hallmark of Guerin’s sophisticated modernist style. Each element is carefully composed, with fine cross-hatching and tonal modulation creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The drawing’s structural intricacy and vertical dynamism evoke both architectural design and abstract sculpture, aligning Guerin’s practice with the broader Constructivist and Hard-Edge movements that flourished in mid-20th-century France. His masterful handling of line and proportion transforms pure geometry into a poetic, architectural vision. Signed “SG” lower right, this work is a superb example of Guerin’s technical skill and visual harmony. It would suit collectors of mid-century design, French abstraction, or modern architectural art...

M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931. Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan. Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...
