About the Item

Terry Frost was one of the leading figures of post-war British abstraction, celebrated for his vibrant colour, dynamic forms, and deeply intuitive approach to composition. Associated with the St Ives School alongside artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, Frost developed a distinctive visual language inspired by landscape, movement, music, and the rhythms of the natural world. Knighted in 1998 for his contribution to British art, his works are represented in major collections including Tate Britain and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Ragatta is a lively and expressive example of Frost’s exploration of movement and colour through abstraction. Executed in pencil and gouache, the composition conveys a powerful sense of rhythm and buoyancy, likely drawing inspiration from the forms and motion of sailing vessels and regatta scenes that fascinated the artist throughout his career. Sweeping lines and boldly arranged areas of colour create an energetic interplay across the surface, demonstrating Frost’s remarkable ability to balance spontaneity with compositional harmony. The immediacy of gouache as a medium perfectly complements Frost’s gestural approach, allowing for vibrant colour contrasts and fluid transitions between form and space. The work retains a freshness and vitality that speaks to the artist’s instinctive, highly personal engagement with abstraction. Signed lower right, Ragatta is a compelling and visually dynamic work that encapsulates the optimism and expressive freedom of post-war British modernism, making it an excellent example of Terry Frost’s celebrated abstract practice. William Black (British, Fl. 1963 – 69) Landscape abstraction Watercolour and ink on paper Signed, inscribed and dated ‘Landscape abstraction William Black 63’ (lower edge) 8 x 11.1/4 in. (20.3 x 28.3 cm.) William Black is a little known and underrated member of the St Ives artist group who, having worked as an architect after the Second World War, went on to work as an artist following the inheritance of money in the early 1950s. He was a self taught artist, producing numerous deconstructivist sculptures in the 1960s. He moved to St Ives in Cornwall where he knew artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. There is a clear architectural element to the sculptures that he made . They illustrate an assemblage of fragmented shapes and forms of a deconstructivist nature. William Black’s artwork is very much rooted in the time and Cornish School so one can see elements from those such as Wilhelmina Barns Graham...
