About The Artist
Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multimedia artist. Her work explores discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. Sophia's paintings are journeys: stories of transitory circumstance, of struggle and survival; patterns, shapes and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, to create moments of sublime present.
The physical process of creating her paintings captures the tangible moment when the elemental forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: low winter sun dancing on shingles; high solstice light bathing the meadow grasses; Sharp Sierra Nevada snowmelt; the salty sea of the Mediterranean; the heaving waters of the Atlantic. Paintings scratched and scarred by tumbling pebbles, the tidal dance, the caress of cherry blossom: narrative portraits, memories, intrinsically embedded.
'I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whisper of a summer's evening, as the shadows creep longer across the lawn. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant: every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, & the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'.
Born in Cornwall in 1980, Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts.
