Stephen Henriques creates oil paintings that move fluidly between abstraction and representation, energized by lush color and thick impasto paint. His recent work draws inspiration from the improvisational spirit of avant-garde jazz, particularly the music of Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk. Like jazz itself, his paintings unfold through risk, rhythm, and intuitive response. Henriques approaches painting as a journey without a fixed destination. His commitment to process allows image, color, and emotion to develop together, giving the work a sense of openness and vitality. Rich in texture and feeling, his paintings invite viewers into a world where an idea remains present but never fully fixed, and where improvisation becomes a form of insight.
