About the Item

Title Abstract Sun and Bridge Composition French Modernist Gouache Suzanne Vattier Key Details Artist: Suzanne Vattier (French, 1901–1996), dated 1973 Medium: Gouache on artist paper Size: 15 x 22 inches (framed) Title: Abstract Figure Provenance: Private collection Condition: In pleasing condition; as with works on paper, minor edge curling or light wear may be present, not visible once framed Description A bold and imaginative abstract composition by Suzanne Vattier, combining architectural form with radiant colour in a distinctly Modernist language. The composition centres on a sweeping, curved bridge or pathway, leading the eye toward a striking circular form that reads as a stylised sun or radiant disc. Concentric rings of yellow, orange, and violet pulse outward, creating a sense of energy and movement, while cooler blues and greens balance the composition across the surrounding space. The interplay between linear structure and circular rhythm gives the work both direction and dynamism. Vattier’s use of gouache allows for rich, saturated colour with a soft, velvety surface. The palette is playful yet controlled, with strong contrasts that heighten the visual impact without overwhelming the composition. Her handling is confident and fluid, with simplified forms that suggest rather than define, leaving space for interpretation. There are clear echoes of her Cubist training under André Lhote, particularly in the structured composition and abstracted forms, yet the work moves beyond strict geometry into a more dreamlike, symbolic territory. The imagery feels both architectural and cosmic, as though bridging landscape and imagination. A striking and decorative piece, ideal for interiors seeking colour, energy, and a touch of mid-century French modernism. Its scale and clarity of form make it particularly effective in contemporary spaces, where it can serve as a vivid focal point.

Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Bridges, 2020, gouache, thread, 8 x 15 in

These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces. Alexandra Rutsch Brock has exhibited in solo and group shows most recently at The Keck School at USC, CA, The Painting Center, NY, Village West Gallery, NJ and Misericordia University, PA. Her work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine SV Vol44. Her recent co-curations include “HyperAccumulators” with Elizabeth Saperstein at Pelham Art Center, NY and “Among Friends” project with artists Patricia Fabricant and Beth Dary...
