About the Item

Thomas Downing Untitled, 1972 Acrylic on canvas 39 1/4 x 84 1/4 inches Thomas Downing received his BA in 1948 from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, and then moved to New York City to study at the Pratt Institute for two years. A grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts provided him an opportunity to study in Europe at the Académie Julian in Paris. Downing moved to Washington, DC, in the 1950s and studied under Kenneth Noland, one of the founding members of the Washington Color School, the association of the city's Color Field painters. Downing shared studio space with fellow Color Field artist Howard Mehring, and by the late 1950s was "trying everything." Beginning in 1965, Downing taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design for three years, where his ideas helped influence the next generation of Color School painters, including Sam Gilliam. In 2007 Thomas Downing was included in Optic Nerve: Perceptual Art in the 1960s at the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio and Lyrical Color: Morris Louis, Gene Davis, Kenneth Noland and the Washington Color School at the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC. In 2015, Downing’s painting Five, 1967 was featured in the Whitney Museum’s inaugural exhibition in their new space America is Hard to See. Downing’s works are in many collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC; the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA; the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, CA; the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, OK; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA.
