About the Item

Walter Edwin McCown Abstract Oil and Encaustic on Board Mid-1960s A powerful mid-century abstract composition by listed Texas artist Walter Edwin McCown, executed in oil and encaustic on board during the height of his mature period. This dynamic work embodies the expressive energy and textural experimentation that defined much of American abstraction in the 1960s. Broad gestural sweeps of umber, ochre, cream, and deep brown intersect with scraped passages and layered wax surfaces, creating a richly atmospheric field charged with movement and depth. The encaustic medium lends the surface a luminous, tactile quality, with areas of transparency and density shifting across the composition. Organic forms emerge and dissolve within the layered brushwork, suggesting both landscape and figure without settling into literal representation. The result is a visceral and emotionally resonant painting that rewards sustained viewing. Born in Whitney, Texas, McCown studied under Dolly Nabinger, Eleanor Roth, and Norma Knight. He began exhibiting with the Texas Watercolor Society in 1951 and earned first prize at the 1960 El Paso Sun Carnival Art Exhibition. A member of the Texas Fine Art Association, he exhibited widely across the state and, after relocating to Waco in 1957, expanded his presence nationally from Los Angeles to New York. He later served as an art instructor, and demand for his distinctive, stylistically confident paintings continued to grow throughout his career. This work comes from the corporate collection of a private Texas bank and represents a strong example of McCown’s expressive mid-1960s output, reflecting both his regional roots and his engagement with broader currents in postwar American abstraction. This work is signed by the artist in the lower left corner on the front of the painting as shown in the images.
