About the Item

Attributed to Edwin Douglas (1848-1914) The shepherd's friend unsigned oil on canvas 12 ¼ x 16 ⅛ in. (31 x 41 cm.) with frame 18 ½ x 22 ½ in. (47 x 57.2 cm.) Known for his finely painted animal subjects, Douglas - who likely produced this painting - specialised in dogs and livestock, often capturing their character with understated intimacy. The soft modelling of the dog’s fur, muted palette, and gentle play of light reflect Douglas’s refined technique and empathetic approach. There appears to be a connection between dog and artist, which opens speculation that the dog belonged to Douglas. The work is housed in a period gilt frame, most likely selected by the artist, when painting the canvas.
