About the Item

José Bedia (Havana, Cuba, 1959) Lives and works in Miami, FL José Bedia is the most solid representative of post-1959 revolution Cuban art. He was part of the now mythical group show Volumen I, which changed the course of the formation of the island and the “Cuban renaissance,” known in Cuba as the 80’s Generation. Galería nina menocal was the first to show the works of the members of this movement outside the island. From early in his career Bedia has focused on studying the culture and spirituality of ancient and primitive populations from Africa, Cuba, Mexico, and the United States. His main interest surrounds incorporating this vision to that of global contemporary art. The use of text, through the use of pictograms, found materials in his endeavors, and his distinct drawing style (borrowed from the masculine realistic style of the Dakota tribe) are carried out with great dexterity, a constant in his line of work. Bedia establishes a personal language, appropriating a “primitive” universe without predatory intention as commonly takes place when our “civilized” mentality tries to interfere. He brings us closer to “uncivilized” and “wild” forms of beauty. Such is the case of “Transformatio Et Metum,” painted in shades of ochre, an earthy pigment with a red tint that is ever-present in primitive art; the essence of primitive spiritual expression. The color is used just as primitive men would have used it, blowing through a hollow piece of sugar cane and onto the surface. Singed, bottom left, “J Bedia 17.”

By Mauricio Sandoval

Located in Mexico City, CDMX

Mauricio Sandoval is an abstract painter, one of the best ever in Mexico; he creates his own pictorial language that expresses a never-ending search and continuous, organic movement. His production is characteristically expansive, sometimes saturating spaces with texture or color, energetic, long, and fluid traces. Sandoval’s work has retained some determining constants throughout his trajectory, during which he has developed a complex relationship between poetic language and image. From an early age, the artist has had an ever-present intense relationship with poetry and literature, as can be observed in “Barroco”, a work based on “Wuthering Heights...

La Portentosa Vida de la Muerte II

By Enrique Chagoya

Located in Lyons, CO

Color lithograph, Edition 30. Enrique Chagoya makes paintings and prints about the changing nature of culture. My artwork is a conceptual fusion of opposite cultural realities that I have experienced in my lifetime. I integrate diverse elements: from pre-Columbian mythology, western religious iconography and American popular culture. On the border of this print surrounding the image the following is written: An American tourist is approached by a Mexican kid holding a small human skull in his hand. He asks him: “Hey Mister, do you want to buy Pancho Villa...
