About the Item

Marie Cameron’s paintings emerge from moments of quiet astonishment in the natural world. Encounters with an albino deer at Pine Mountain Lake, a leucistic hummingbird at the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum, and an albino redwood at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park sparked a deeper inquiry into the increasing presence of albinism and leucism within native flora and fauna. As human development expands and wild habitats become fragmented, isolated gene pools heighten the expression of these rare genetic traits. In her Fade to White series, Cameron translates this phenomenon into visual metaphor. Layers of encaustic veil her oil paintings of plants and animals, at times inscribing faint lines of pigment, colors that feel as though they are disappearing. The veil becomes symbolic, a gesture toward the quiet erasure unfolding in the natural world, an atmosphere we are, often unknowingly, drawing across wildlife itself. Artist statement An old meaning of periphery is to bear or to carry around, this, combined with its meaning of being on the edge seems to hint at the environment of the leucistic deer - on the edge of the urban wildland interface, more likely because of a reduced genetic pool due to developmental expansion and an additional protection from some of its wild predators. The first time I saw an albino deer, I was staying with my family at a cabin in the Sierra. I was washing dishes and gazing out the window, as one does, when I noticed what I thought was a white dog standing at the edge of the lake. A dog, but not a dog. I grabbed my camera and used the telephoto lens to look more closely, only to realize it was an ethereal deer. It felt like an apparition, something impossibly luminous and unlikely to survive in these dark forests, were it not for its proximity to a gated community that protected it from natural predators. I was awestruck, deeply curious, and utterly inspired. We are shaping wildlife through our ever increasing proximity to it. In the age of the Anthropocene, what remains truly wild? Yet even within the narrow slivers of nature that persist, there are still moments of quiet beauty and wonder. These encounters, fleeting and fragile, continue to move us and ask us to look more carefully at the world we are changing. Unwilding, Oil on canvas, 48 x 36 inches unframed. Ready to hang and enjoy.
