Gómez” (“To my distinguished friend, Professor Gómez”) Condition: Good. Displays an aged patina with light surface craquelure. Original gilt frame with period ornamental moulding, showing wear consistent with its age. Provenance: Private collection, Sitges. DESCRIPTION This genre scene depicts two young peasants in a quiet moment of pause, rendered with intimate and contemplative sensitivity. One stands, gazing calmly at his seated companion, who sits with his head bowed, lost in thought. The artist masterfully captures not only anatomy and gesture but also a rural stillness, enhanced by an earthy palette of ochres and umbers. The traditional attire — notably the red Catalan-style cap — and the clay jug held by the standing figure evoke a scene of simple yet dignified life. The dense brushwork, use of chiaroscuro, and balanced composition reinforce the work’s academic character. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Adrián de Unzueta (Mexico, 1865 – first half of the 20th century) was a distinguished painter and draftsman trained at the Academia de San Carlos, where he studied under masters such as José María Velasco and Santiago Rebull. He later taught at the same institution between 1897 and 1908. His work ranges from anatomical and botanical drawings to historical and genre scenes. Unzueta was especially esteemed as a scientific and academic illustrator, leaving behind a legacy of technical precision and artistic sensitivity. Part of his oeuvre is preserved in the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) and the Museo Nacional de Historia (INAH).
