About the Item

Part of the series "The Journey Home", this portrait of a young girl seated on a tree trunk with a cat in her lap reflects Alena’s ongoing exploration of memory, place, and the passage of time. The work is inspired by visits she made with her daughters to the natural landscapes she had explored as a child with her parents and grandmother. Through the image of her daughter, Alena revisits these locations, where traces of the past remain embedded in the landscape. Former railway tracks that once connected these places have disappeared beneath vegetation, allowing nature to reclaim what was once shaped by human activity. The painting brings together different temporal layers within a single setting, linking the artist’s childhood memories with the experiences of a new generation. This intersection of place and time is a recurring theme in Alena’s work, where landscapes become carriers of personal history and continuity.
