Original oil on canvas painting of the landmark Cafe Dome in Paris by Andre Picot. Adjacent to the Dome is another famous cafe, Cafe Tabac as seen in this painting. Condition is very good. Signed lower left by the artist. Titled “Cafe Le Dome” and signed verso on stretcher as well. The painting is housed in its original gold wood frame in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 20.75 by 24.75 inches. Andre Picot was born in France in 1910. Although Picot studied briefly at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Rouen he was essentially a self taught artist and began painting at an early age. Until 1956 he took part in small group exhibitions and regional salons in Rouen and Normandy. He held solo shows in Paris as well. He is known for his Parisian Street scenes and famous landmarks of the city. He died in 1992. Le Dôme Café (French pronunciation: [lə dom]) or Café du Dôme is a restaurant in Montparnasse, Paris that first opened in 1898 (124 years ago). Based on the example established by La Closerie des Lilas (created in 1847) and followed by Café de la Rotonde (created in 1911), Le Select (created in 1925), and La Coupole (created in 1927), Le Dôme was renowned as an intellectual gathering place for artists and writers during the interwar period. Le Dôme created and disseminated gossip and provided message exchanges and an 'over the table' market that dealt in artistic and literary futures. It was frequented by painters, sculptors, writers, poets, models, art connoisseurs and dealers.
