About the Item

Christian Ludwig Freiherr von Löwenstern (Darmstadt 1701 - Darmstadt 1754) - Battle between infantry troops with an explosion. 37,5 x 63,5 cm. Oil on canvas, unframed (not signed). Christian Ludwig Freiherr von Löwenstern was a German military officer and amateur painter active in the first half of the 18th century. His pictorial output focuses primarily on battle subjects, in which his direct military experience translates into a vivid and immediate rendering of armed conflict. The composition depicts an intense field battle dominated by a violent explosion at the centre, from which a reddish light radiates across the surrounding soldiers. In the foreground, figures in 18th-century uniforms, some fallen, others in flight, animate the scene with strong narrative energy. To the right, an officer in ceremonial dress directs his troops amid the chaos. The sky, crossed by clouds of smoke, closes the composition in dark tones that heighten the contrast with the central blaze. Condition report: Original canvas.
