About the Item

CRISTIANO FELISMINA Red 09, 2026 Oil on canvas 89 × 146 cm 35.0 × 57.5 in Red 09 stands among the most striking works in Cristiano Felismina's Red series, presented in the exhibition Silent Screams. The painting transforms the human portrait into a meditation on vulnerability, resilience and the invisible emotional burdens that shape the human condition. Rather than depicting violence itself, Felismina portrays its psychological aftermath—the silence that remains once the noise has disappeared. The anonymous figure confronts the viewer with quiet dignity. Crimson flows across the face and body, yet never functions as a literal narrative device. Throughout the Red series, the colour becomes a psychological language, simultaneously evoking pain, sacrifice, love, rebirth and transformation. It refuses a single interpretation, inviting each viewer to complete the story through personal memory and emotional experience. The frontal composition reinforces this emotional encounter. The upward angle of the face suggests both fragility and determination, while the restrained expression avoids melodrama in favour of introspection. Suspended against an atmospheric green background, the subject exists outside any identifiable place or time, becoming a universal symbol rather than an individual portrait. Cristiano Felismina's distinctive approach to contemporary realism rejects photographic imitation in favour of what he defines as the "illusion of detail." Visible brushwork, subtle transitions of light and carefully controlled atmosphere create an image that breathes with emotional authenticity. Every painterly decision serves the psychological presence of the figure rather than technical virtuosity alone. Like the exhibition Silent Screams, Red 09 explores the emotional landscapes hidden beneath the surface of the human face. It asks how silence can become a language and how a portrait can reveal what words inevitably fail to express. The result is a deeply contemplative work that invites sustained reflection on identity, endurance and hope. Cristiano Felismina has established himself as one of Portugal's most compelling contemporary figurative painters through selections and distinctions at prestigious competitions including MEAM Figurativas, ModPortrait, the Francisco de Zurbarán International Painting Prize, and the Abel Manta Painting Prize. His paintings combine exceptional technical refinement with profound emotional resonance, earning growing recognition among collectors of contemporary figurative art.
