About the Item

Frank Usher de Voll Paris Street Scene, circa 1910 Signed lower right Oil on canvas 21 x 27 1/2 inches Frederick Usher De Voll was an American landscape painter whose work captured both the urban vitality of New York City and the quieter charm of Providence, Rhode Island. Active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he exhibited widely at prominent institutions including the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. His paintings are notable for their sensitivity to atmospheric effects—snowfall, nocturnes, and shifting light across recognizable landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, and the East River. Born in Providence in 1873, De Voll trained at the Rhode Island School of Design before studying with leading American artists including William Merritt Chase, Charles Webster Hawthorne, and Robert Henri. He later continued his education in Paris at the Académie Julian under Jean-Paul Laurens. Chase’s influence is especially evident in his early work, with its crisp, naturalistic handling of urban subject matter. Over time, however, De Voll developed a more tonal sensibility, often employing a violet-inflected palette and fluid brushwork that has invited comparisons to Georges-Pierre Seurat. A pivotal European trip in 1907 with his wife led to a substantial body of work painted across Holland, Ireland, England, and France, later exhibited to critical acclaim at the Providence Art Club. Despite his international travels and professional success, De Voll remained deeply rooted in Providence, where he was an active member of the local art community and operated a toy store in the historic Westminster Arcade. Among his honors were a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition for East River, New York, Winter (ca. 1914), and the Senior Prize at the Providence Art Club’s annual exhibition in 1930 for Golden City. He died in 1941, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both the immediacy of American urban life and a refined sensitivity to mood and atmosphere shaped by transatlantic influences.
