Painted with remarkable economy and confidence, this delightful work captures both the leisure and tranquillity of a summer’s day on one of America’s most celebrated island destinations. The composition centres upon a group of figures relaxing upon the beach beneath a distinctive striped parasol, while bathers and families enjoy the calm waters beyond. Cowley employs a soft, restrained palette of sandy ochres, muted blues and gentle greens, perfectly conveying the hazy warmth of a summer afternoon. Frederick Kitson Cowley was born in Leeds and became one of Britain’s most respected painters and illustrators during the first half of the twentieth century.
