About the Item

Dramatic, monumental oil painting laid to Masonite by George Matthews Harding (1882-1959). Painter, illustrator and muralist, Harding was born in Philadelphia. He studied at the Pyle School, was an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post and Harpers. He did Post Office Murals for the WPA. The painting consists of a painting on canvas laid to Masonite. The painting features lobstermen in a skiff, with lobster traps, and one passenger carrying a shotgun. Hunted birds are retained in the skiff for future consumption. The depiction of rugged hunters in cold waters of the northeast sends a message of fortitude and self reliance that would have resonated during the WPA.
