About the Item

Oil on Canvas. In terms of its painterly style and subject matter, the painting is reminiscent of the works associated with Giacomo Francesco Cipper, known as “il Todeschini,” an artist of Austrian origin who made his name in Milan. He was a specialist in market scenes, outdoor concerts, card players, and scenes of humble daily life realized with laughable caricature forcing and a search for comic effect. As in this painting, which depicts a young commoner tending to two hens placed in a basket on the table—although the knife lying nearby suggests that ... he’ll be slaughtering them soon! Cipper's characters, though humble, are characterized by a cheeky disposition, evident in the way they stare directly at the viewer to draw their attention, as is the case here: the boy is looking straight ahead They laugh and wink, seeking the approval—or even the complicity—of the viewer. The work can therefore be attributed to an artist closely associated with Cipper. It has undergone restoration and re-tuning in the past. It is presented in a guilloché frame from the early 1900s. Not signed.
