About the Item

Hildegard Rath, (1909-1994) painter, author, teacher, and lecturer, Born in Wurttemberg, Germany, in the Black Forest region of Germany. Hildegard Rath became a painter of landscape, portraits, still lifes, and marine subjects and also a muralist. Her father was a bank president, her mother a sculptor, writer, and illustrator of children's books. At the age of 15, Miss Rath painted her first portrait in oil as a birthday present for her father and thereafter every opportunity for study was given to her. She went to art school at the Atelier House in Stuttgart, Germany and at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Berlin. She studied with Lotte Laserstein and Otto Manigk, studying with Adolf Senglaub. In Germany she had numerous commissions for oil paintings in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1946, she married the sculptor Hermann Gross and emigrated to New York City. She became a citizen and settled in King's Point, New York. From 1949 to 1954, she was Director of Painting at the European School of Fine Arts in New York City and then became a lecturer in art history at the Great Neck Public Schools, 1961-62, and a lecturer on serigraphy at the North Shore Art Center. Her preferred media are oil, pastel, watercolor and charcoal. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous one-man and group shows throughout both Europe and the U.S.A. and are represented in many public and private collections on both sides of the Atlantic.

Matskin Ruvim Izrailevich (Russian / Israeli, 1926-1996) - Sabbath Prayer Oil on Canvas 1991 Hand signed in Cyrillic 36 X 32 inches (90x80cm) Rare judaica by a Soviet realist artist. Ruvim Izrailevich Matskin was born in 1926 in Kryvy (Ukraine). In 1955 he graduated from Kharkov State Art School, and in 1970 joined the Kharkov Artists’ Union. Since 1963 he worked at the Industrial Art dep. of the UkraSSR Art Fund. In the late 1880s he and his family moved to Israel. Matskin passed away in 2002. Took part in numerous exhibitions of fine art in the USSR Select Exhibitions Behind the Iron Curtain. The Art of Socialist Realism 20 Years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall 1989-2009, Berlino 2009 Guardando all'URSS. Realismo socialista in Italia dal mito al mercato, Fruttiere di Palazzo Te, Mantova 2015 World Exposition, Milano 2015 The exhibition was held at the Jeschke-Van Vliet gallery in Berlin, which was located in the former Berlin Wall zone, adding a layer of symbolic resonance to the project artists included Askhat Gazizulinovich Safargalin, Petr Ivanovich Kostinsky, Vyacheslav Vasilevich Tokarev, Boris Eremeevich Vladimirski, Alexander Deyneka His most well-known work was the monumental revolutionary "The Defence of Petrograd" from 1928. His mosaics cover the ceiling of Mayakovskaya Metro station in Moscow. Yuri Pimenov A founder member of the Society of Easel Painters, he was well known for documenting Moscow's changes from the 1930s to the 60s, as in his 1937 painting "New Moscow". Marius Sznajderman was a painter, printmaker and scenic designer living and working in the United States. Born in Paris, France in 1926 his Jewish parents had migrated to France from Poland in 1923. In November 1942 the family fled Nazi-occupied France for Spain before settling in Caracas, Venezuela. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Caracas where his teachers included illustrator Ramon Martin Durban, scenic designer Charles Ventrillon-Horber and painter Rafael Monasterios. and immigrated to the United States in 1949, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University in New York. He settled in Hackensack, New Jersey, where he lived and had a studio for more than 50 years before moving to Amherst, Massachusetts in 2015. His work, which includes painting, prints and collages, as well as set designs, is in more than 45 museum and public institution collections in the United States, Latin America and Israel. He held more than 40 solo exhibitions at galleries and museums and participated in more than 75 group shows around the globe. He helped found the Taller Libre de Arte, an experimental workshop for the visual arts, sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The Taller Libre de Arte was a center for young artists to work and to meet with critics and intellectuals to discuss avant-garde ideas and artistic trends from Europe and Latin America. Among the notable artists who participated in the Taller Libre de Arte were Ramón Vásquez Brito, Carlos González Bogen, Luis Guevara Moreno, Mateo Manaure, Virgilio Trómpiz, Alirio Oramas, Dora Hersen, Alejandro Otero, Jesús Rafael Soto, Pascual Navarro, Aimée Battistini, José Fernández Díaz...
