About the Item

Jacques Sébastien Leclerc, known as Leclerc des Gobelins Paris, 1733 – Paris, 1785 The Harvester's nap Oil on wood 23 x 30 cm (28.5 x 35 cm with frame) Inscription on the back: "Jacques Sébastien Leclerc (1734-1785)" Son of Sébastien Leclerc II (1676-1763) and grandson of Sébastien Leclerc (1637-1714), Jacques Sébastien Leclerc, known as Leclerc des Gobelins (because he lived at the Gobelins Manufactory), was initially a painter of genre scenes like his father, and even of gallant scenes and "daring scenes," as the Lorraine art historian Jeanne Lejeaux writes. The art of Leclerc des Gobelins is recognizable by its beautiful landscapes with exquisite foliage remindingof 17th-century Flemish art, its vibrant and beautiful colors, and the refined elegance of its figures with their delicate, youthful faces, perfectly suited to scenes of romance! Our painting certainly illustrates one of those "contes grivois" of the 18th-century. The landscape is particularly well-executed, delicate, and beautifully colored, as are the elegant and expressive young women, each in their own pose beside the handsome young man!

Johannes JANSON (Attributed to) Amboyna (Moluccan Islands), 1729 - Leyden, 1784 Oil on canvas 47 x 57 cm (62 x 72 cm with frame) Trace of signature lower right Monogrammed and dated on the back "1755"Inscription on the recto « Johannes Janson » Very beautiful frame of the 18th century in gilded wood Good condition (just a bit of thinness, a repair and a few repaints, well restored) As for the painting by Johannes Janson exhibited in the Louvre museum, our painting is also a "typical example of retrospective pastiche - much appreciated in the 18th century. – of recognized masters of the Golden Age, the specialists in Dutch rustic landscape Potter, Adriaen van de Velde or Dujardin. Recognizable in our painting is the way Janson represents trees, and animals (the horse in particular on the left is recognizable). And also the silhouettes of his small characters painted in bright colors. This village fair is a rich composition with many characters, musicians, drummers, peasant men and women, children. The scene is very cheerful and it has the charm of the festive atmosphere of the Dutch countryside with many picturesque details represented such as the dancers with a glass or a pitcher in their hands, the dishes or baskets which circulate filled with food, the child playing with a dog or the musician with the violin who animates the assembly. The vivid colors are characteristic of Dutch 17th century genre...

Willem Muys was a Dutch, 18th-century painter of history pieces, portraits and cabinet pieces. Above all, he appears to have been active as a painter of ‘wallpaper’. Until the mid-18th century, ‘wallpaper’ was not painted on paper but on coarsely woven linen. Wealthy citizens had their mansions or country estates adorned with ‘wallpaper’ with landscapes, exotic birds or chinoiseries. Willem Muys mainly painted ‘wallpaper’, which means that few of his works have been preserved. They are hardly represented in public collections. The works of his sons, Nicolaas en Robbert, both painters, are a little less rare. The painting with Rebecca and Eliezer...
