About the Item

John Brakewell Baldwin 1885-1915, John Brake Baldwin or Brake Baldwin as he was known was an English born painter. He enrolled at the Heatherley School of Fine Art aged 21. Distinguished alumni of Heatherleys also included Rosetti, Poynter, and Burne-Jones amongst others. In 1911 he married fellow student Edith Wilson, moving to Kensington and building a studio in the garden at 6 Phillimore Terrace. This move precipitated Baldwin's most productive years of artistic output - between 1912 and 1914 he exhibited widely alongside William Orpen, John Lavery and John Singer Sargent at the Royal Institute of Painters and alongside Philpot, Augustus John and WAlter Sickert at the National Portrait Society and the Royal Academy. This painting is signed. We have attributed it as a study, the original which is estimated at £20,000 to £30,000, therefore we have priced the work at an attributed value. I have included a brief scholarly biography of the artist for your interest. Artist Biography Brake Baldwin (1885-1915) John Brakewell, known as Brake, Baldwin was born in Eltham in 1885. He attended The Forest School where, amongst his other school activities, he ‘supplied a sort of side-show with his painting.’ In 1906 he joined the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London, run by Henry Gibbs Massey who had a deep admiration for the French atelier methods of teaching. In 1909 Baldwin and five other students formed the ’09 Club, which held its first successful exhibition at the Dore Galleries in January of that year. Baldwin received enthusiastic recognition by the press. In the autumn, the ‘London Star’ described his painting ‘After the Sermon’ as ‘an essay in up-to-date realism ... it is a study in observation of real life seldom seen in so young an artist.’ His paintings are mainly concerned with ‘city’ realism, and he produced a series concerned with the structural domesticity of the Edwardian household. These include cooks and maids who become icon-like pillars of the establishment in the same way that Millet ennobled the farm labourer. In 1914 Baldwin joined the Red Cross, and was soon organising the transportation of the wounded from the Front to various London hospitals. The strain of the job and the long hours led to his premature death in 1915.
