1780's-1800 Fine English School Ink & Watercolor Group of Four Figure Studies Rustic Characters Portrait Sketches on Mount Late 18th / Early 19th Century English School circa 1780–1800 ink drawings with watercolour wash on artist paper, stuck on grey paper, unframed Overall size: 16 x 12 inches Provenance: private collection, UK Condition: very good for age, with minor old stains and wear to the corners and paper edges consistent with age A charming group of four late 18th century English school figure studies, arranged together on a later grey mount. Each individual drawing presents a distinct character, rendered with confident ink line and subtle watercolour wash. The studies include a standing rustic male figure in loose rural dress, a more refined standing figure in hat and coat, a figure viewed from behind leaning on a post, and a young female figure in simple dress. Together they form a varied and engaging collection of observational sketches, likely drawn from life or as preparatory studies. The artist demonstrates a strong ability to capture posture, gesture, and personality with economical line work. The restrained palette and loose handling are typical of late 18th century sketch practice, where emphasis is placed on form and character rather than finish.
