About the Item

A striking 1930s Modern portrayal of El Greco's Renaissance masterpiece, "Mater Dolorosa" by Notable California Woman Artist, Leonine E. Wallace. Artwork size: 13 x 10 inches. Oil on paper on board. Framed size: 15 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist. The painting is Wallace's unique interpretation of "Mater Dolorosa" (Mother of Sorrows), a subject painted several times by the Spanish Renaissance master, El Greco. Most likely a student copy of the original painting completed while the artist was traveling & studying in Europe in the early 1930s. The specific composition features a woman in a green cloak and a white lace veil with hands clasped in prayer closely matches the "Mater Dolorosa" currently held at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid. Depicting The Virgin Mary grieving, a common theme in 16th-century Spanish religious art, "Mater Dolorosa" showcases El Greco's signature Mannerist style, characterized by dramatic chiaroscuro (strong contrasts between light and dark) and emotional intensity. Born in Alameda, California on April 26, 1896, Leontine Wallace began her art studies with the famed Modernist painter & sculptor, Maurice Sterne. She travelled to Europe in the early 1930s and studied painting with André Lhote in Paris. The artist was a lifelong resident of California, living and teaching in the Berkeley area and in San Francisco. She taught art for many years at Marysville High School, north of San Francisco. Upon retirement in 1959, she settled in Carmel Valley and lived there until her demise on June 26, 1971.
