About the Item

Girl with a doll, 1930s Post-Impressionist Oil on Linen 20x16.5in framed 22.75x19.x1.75 in. Painting depicting a young girl in profile seated and playing with a doll. Rendered with soft expressive brushwork and warm tonal hues. Signed lower right, title on the verso. Presented in a gilt frame. Ludvig Jacobsen (Danish, 1890-1957), Carl Ludwig Jacobsen was a prolific artist and produced a diverse portfolio of work. Prior to becoming a painter, he worked as an illustrator and cartoonist at Danish newspaper ‘Dags Pressen’. His skill for drawing enabled him to turn his hand to various disciplines. He was inspired by the old masters, such as Delacroix, Rubens and Corot. However, as you can see here, he also gained inspiration from the French post-impressionists. He travelled extensively to further his art education and exhibited all over Europe. But perhaps his greatest achievement was a commission to provide decorative works for the Royal Danish Theatre.
