About the Item

Title: Music School Artist: María Paulina Díez MacGrove (Colombia, 1974) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 46 x 33 cm (approx. 18.1 x 13 in) Support: Unframed canvas Date: 2009 Signature: Signed and dated in the lower right corner: “Diez MacGrove 09” Condition: Good, with rich impasto texture and prominent brushwork. Reverse side partially covered in white primer. DESCRIPTION The painting depicts a surreal and grotesque interior scene set in what appears to be a music school, indicated by the “MUSIC SCHOOL” sign in the background. The central figures, a man and a woman, are rendered with exaggerated expressions and anatomies, holding oversized musical instruments—a violin and a double bass. Their enormous grins and intense eye contact create a humorous and almost conspiratorial atmosphere. In the background, a child-like figure walks up a blue stairway, adding depth and a narrative twist. In the foreground, a bright yellow chicken tied to a string, seemingly held by the man, introduces an absurd and satirical element to the composition. The deformed faces, elongated limbs, and vibrant color palette create a theatrical and ironic tone. The work is a playful and critical commentary on academic and artistic environments, blending figuration with a surreal sense of humor. ABOUT THE ARTIST María Paulina Díez MacGrove, born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, in 1974, studied Journalism and Fine Arts. Daughter of painters, she was raised in a strongly artistic environment. Her work is figurative, often grotesque and symbolic, and reflects a strong narrative component with social commentary. She has exhibited in Colombia, the United States, Germany, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Spain. Her paintings have appeared in over 25 international auctions and on art platforms such as Artelista and Subarna (Barcelona). Her pieces often explore human themes through irony and expressive technical execution. SIMILAR WELL-KNOWN ARTISTS Although Díez MacGrove’s style is unique, her work can be compared conceptually with other artists who explored the grotesque, satire, or expressionist figuration: George Grosz – for his social critique and expressive distortion James Ensor – for theatrical absurdity and the use of masks Jean Dubuffet – for raw textures and art brut aesthetics Fernando Botero – for anatomical exaggeration as a stylistic tool Philip Guston (late period) – for his awkward humor, cartoonish figures, and introspective tone

Title: Street Musicians Artist: Albert Roca i Cama (Palamós, 1945 – 2023) Technique: Oil on canvas board Dimensions: 71 x 51 cm (27.95 x 20.08 in) Support: Canvas board Signature: Signed in the lower right corner as “214 Roca” Approximate date: Late 20th – early 21st century Condition: Very good Framing: Unframed Description of the work: The painting depicts two street musicians in a profoundly expressive scene. In the foreground, a man rests his arm on an accordion, his gaze lost in thought and a contemplative expression on his face, while holding a straw or toothpick between his lips. Behind him, another figure plays a transverse flute with closed eyes, fully immersed in his music. The composition conveys serenity and weariness, presenting an intimate moment imbued with urban lyricism. The brushwork is loose yet confident, reinforcing the emotional depth of the characters. The color palette blends warm tones with hints of grey and blue, emphasizing the introspective and street-like atmosphere. The overall impression is of a moment suspended in time, where music and life intertwine in the silent dignity of their expressions. Artist biography: Albert Roca i Cama was born in Palamós in 1945 and passed away in 2023. He was a Catalan painter associated with expressive realism, known for his energetic strokes and mastery of color. From an early age, he showed artistic inclination and worked in Barcelona alongside comic artist García...
