About the Item

Artist's statement: In my series Critical Masses, I explore the relationship between our species and various small marine creatures to illustrate in symbolic form various narratives of how we impact entire eco-systems through our oversized consumption and habitat disruption in this late stage of the Anthropocene. The masses of discarded shells, featured in many of these paintings, are inspired by middens, which are mounds or deposits of shells, bones and detritus left from human settlements. Over these clusters I superimpose a surreal element that represents the human interaction in a way that hopefully invites curiosity in a strangely relatable way. Oysters, like many mollusks, are having a hard time building their shells due to ocean acidification. Increased carbon dioxide in the air is absorbed by the ocean, together with pollution, rising temperatures and other factors make it difficult for the oyster larvae in particular to form their calcium carbonate shells. In Oyster Melt I try to symbolize a dissolving of a species, stressed and threatened by climate change. Proudly presented by Andra Norris Gallery in California.
