About the Item

This work was created during the artist’s participation in a plein air session of Ukrainian painters in the city of Kerch, Crimea. It was her last visit to Crimea before the annexation in 2014. The painting presents a view along Kerch street, which gives the landscape its title. Second Mithridates Street runs along the slope of Mount Mithridates. It is an old street with the single-story buildings typical of northern Crimea — modest fishermen’s houses beneath tiled roofs. A boat rests directly on the roadway. At its far end, the street meets the sea. Despite its evident realism, this plein air landscape is filled with a quiet sense of admiration. It conveys a collective image of a romanticized Crimea — a place where every street seems to descend toward the sea.
