About the Item

This intimate figurative painting is based on a true encounter that took place in Kyiv in July 2022. At a time when the city remained unusually quiet and only a few apartments in my building were occupied, a stray cat appeared in the courtyard. One day he came to my apartment door and began to meow. I opened the door, and he walked inside. For several months he remained remarkably cautious and almost never approached the entrance. With time, however, the balance of power changed. He became the unmistakable master of the home. The woman depicted in the interior is me. The black cat in the foreground represents the animal who unexpectedly became part of my life. The open doorway serves as both a compositional device and a symbol of the moment our lives crossed. What began as a simple act of offering shelter gradually became companionship. There is also a deliberately intimate humour in the scene. I enjoy watching him wake, stretch, and confidently proceed toward the kitchen as though he were beginning his daily responsibilities — while I quietly accept my role as his staff. For me, the work is ultimately about the unexpected ways a home is created: not simply by walls and furniture, but by the living presence of another being. It is a painting about chance, companionship, resilience and the quiet restoration of ordinary life. Sometimes we believe that we are rescuing someone. Only later do we discover that they may have come to rescue us. Dutch acrylic paints Amsterdam tm and Italian canvas by Unico were used. The finish is satin varnish, and the edges are painted in the background color. This painting is created on a pre-stretched canvas on a wooden frame. It is carefully packed in a cardboard box with layers of bubble wrap. The artwork is signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
