About the Item

Cultural identity portrait coin painting exploring belonging, migration and representation through circular portraiture on hand-painted wood panel. This artwork belongs to Natasha Lelenco’s ongoing Currencies series, a body of work that investigates identity, migration and systems of value through the visual language of coins, medals and official currency. Painted on a circular wood panel, the work transforms the familiar format of a coin into a portrait that reflects on belonging, cultural memory and social visibility. The composition presents the profile of an anonymous figure rendered in warm ochre, orange and red tones against a luminous copper-colored ground. Encircling the portrait is an inscription that references questions of cultural identity and collective belonging, reinforcing the work’s exploration of how personal histories become intertwined with larger social narratives. Within the Currencies series, Natasha Lelenco replaces the rulers, political leaders and national heroes traditionally represented on coins with anonymous individuals whose stories reflect contemporary experiences of migration, identity and cultural displacement. These portraits function as symbolic currencies whose value emerges not from institutions but from lived experience, memory and human connection. The circular format plays a central role in the work. Coins traditionally communicate authority, legitimacy and economic value; here, however, the format is reimagined as a space for questioning how societies assign value to individuals, identities and cultural backgrounds. The portrait becomes both an image and a statement about visibility, representation and belonging. Born in Moldova and based in Spain, Lelenco frequently draws upon themes of migration, foreignness and cultural transition. Through portraiture, text and symbolic forms, Currencies examines the complex relationship between identity and place while proposing alternative ways of understanding value in contemporary society. Each artwork in the series is individually hand-painted on a circular wooden panel measuring 26 cm in diameter and 2 cm in depth. The works are designed to function both individually and as part of larger modular installations composed of multiple portraits from the series. Collectors interested in creating larger configurations are encouraged to inquire about combined acquisitions.
