About the Item

Nicolò Cercignani, known as “il Pomarancio,” *The Transfiguration*, a large-scale oil painting on copper plate. The work is attributed to Nicolò Cercignani, known as il Pomarancio (Pomarance c. 1517 – 1597 Città della Pieve), who, along with Ricciarelli, was one of the leading figures of Tuscan Mannerist painting, which developed throughout the sixteenth century in Volterra and other towns in the Val di Cecina, in three major strands: the cultured style of classical derivation, expressed in the supreme examples of Rosso; the reformed style of Santi di Tito, Balducci, and Naldini; and the style of foreign influence exemplified by Pieter De Witte of Bruges. There are also important local artists such as Cercignani, who played a role in the evolution of painting in the second half of the 16th century, drawing inspiration from the sudden movements and iridescent effects of Rosso Fiorentino and combining the Sienese styles of Sodoma and Beccafumi with Michelangelo’s monumentalism. In this beautiful Transfiguration by Raphael, painted on copper in an unusually large format, Measuring 65 x 50 cm, Cercignani manages to maintain an atmosphere of intense pathos in the scene while portraying the figures with expressions that are more subdued and less dramatic than those in the original painting. This entry was prepared by the antique gallery “Le Quinte di via dell’Orso” in Milan. The work is unsigned and is set in a modern gilded frame. The condition is good; the copper plate is slightly wavy on the upper left side, and the UV light indicates It shows minimal pitting and color loss, consistent with the 16th century. Date: circa 1580. Height: 73 (65) cm Width: 57.5 (49.7) cm Depth: 3 cm This work is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago requires a governative license for export called Belle Arti.
