About the Item

For those who appreciate good academic painting and drawing, study Pearl Frush. She gets it right. In the present work, Frush paints a perfect face. Not just anatomically, but also in capturing the subject's grace and charming 1940s femininity. Here's a face to fall in love with, and that was the point. Study her hands, they are portraits as well and evoke the epitome of femininity. The painting was done for a calendar, so it had to be graphic to stop, grab, and hold the spectator. Capturing a peak moment of joyous exhilaration. "Smooth Sailing" floats on air as much as it sails on water... with style, grace, and timeless elegance. It's a woman painting a woman for men. How wonderfully interesting a concept, and executed in 1945 at the end of WWII. Faintly signed lower left: Pearl Frush. Provenance: Property from the Louis and Susan Meisel Collection. The present work is published as a calendar for Gerlach-Barklow Calendar Co. and appears as figure 423 in The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel (Taschen, 1996).
