About the Item

Morning Vine, 2017, oil on traditional gesso primed canvas mounted on wood panel with incised line drawing, 54 x 40 inches Morning Vine is painted on a traditional gesso primed surface (made from rabbit skin glue, marble dust and titanium white pigment). Olson employs this classical priming technique to create an incredibly smooth marble-like surface that lends itself to the lush layers of oil paint as well as the varied incised line drawing which she carves directly into the surface of each piece. In this painting, Olson takes her amalgamated figures deep into the sea and just above the surface. In Morning Vine, a cloudy bird form eats bugs, berries and fetal shaped pods off a vine that swings impossibly above a dawning sea. Olson speculates with this and other paintings what might have happened if birds got the upper hand with evolution and humans were left behind with insects and larvae. Sarah Olson explores the beginning of life and the creation of the world through the lens of religion and science. She has exhibited paintings, drawings and created performances and sculptural installations in New York City and abroad in various galleries, public spaces and on residencies in remote locations in India, Scotland, England and El Salvador. While working within traditional drawing and painting media, she also incorporates plastic waste into her images and performances such as bags, bottles, lids, six-pack rings; questioning the constant stream of garbage that piles ever higher as populations soar. A live video of her work most recently was displayed this August at Summer Stage in Central Park during a performance by vocalist, Tamar-Kali. Her sculpture and painting have recently been displayed at Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in New York City. Her work as also been shown at DA Gallery, Gallery Satori, The Dahesh Museum, Columbia University in New York City; and the Rivington Gallery and Museum of Design in London, among others. She has created performances for the Joyce Theater, Littlefield Performance and Art Space, and the Education Alliance in New York City. Her work is in the collections of Bruce W. Ferguson, Eric Fischl and Eileen Guggenheim. Olson lives and works in Brooklyn with her husband and three children. She holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

'Something Happened" Large Scale Abstract Painting

By Debra Drexler

Located in New York, NY

Violet, blue and red intertwine in this gestural abstract painting by Debra Drexler. This painting is inspired by the intensity of light and colors in Hawaii, where the artist splits her time between there and New York City. Bold lines and brushstrokes enhance the composition in this large scale painting by the artist. Debra Drexler maintains studios in both New York and Oahu, and her work is informed by her unique bi-coastal experience. Her work translates the inner experience into outer form through a vigorous athletic painterly process. Drexler has had over 30 solo exhibits and over 100 group exhibitions at galleries and museums in New York, Hawai’i, Australia, Berlin and across the states. New York, NY. In 2017, her two-person exhibition was reviewed in Whitehot Magazine and Arte Fuse. Her most recent solo New York exhibits were at Van Der Plas Gallery in 2015 and 2017. She had a solo exhibition at The Majestic Theater curated by The Dorado Project in Jersey City in 2016. Other recent New York solo exhibits include: Pool Art Fair, Chelsea Hotel Blue...
