About the Item

Siebe Johannes ten Cate (Sneek, 1858 – Paris, 1908) On the Steamboat, circa 1880 Oil on canvas 40 × 24 cm 58 x 42 cm framed Signed lower left Born in Friesland and trained in the Netherlands and Belgium, Siebe Johannes ten Cate settled in Paris as a young man, where he developed a highly personal form of atmospheric Impressionism. A tireless traveller, he became particularly renowned for his views of harbours, rivers and modern city life. His works were exhibited in France and abroad, notably with the Société des Artistes Français and the Munich Secession, and are today represented in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay. In On the Steamboat, Ten Cate adopts an unusually immediate viewpoint, placing the spectator directly upon the deck of a working vessel. The narrow vertical composition is structured by the mast, rigging and smoking funnel, while tarpaulins, ropes, sacks and pieces of equipment crowd the foreground. Small figures standing on the upper deck provide a sense of scale and reinforce the impression of an active, inhabited space. Rather than offering a conventional panoramic marine view, the artist concentrates on the physical reality of the ship itself. The machinery and apparent disorder of the deck are transformed into a remarkably dynamic arrangement of diagonals, verticals and overlapping forms. Ten Cate’s vigorous, heavily worked brushstrokes are particularly expressive in the folded canvas and cargo, contrasting with the pale, freely painted sky. The restrained palette of greys, ochres and earthy browns is enlivened by touches of red, yellow and deep blue. Above the deck, the dense smoke from the funnel gradually dissolves into the overcast atmosphere, softening the industrial subject and lending the scene a subtly poetic quality. Dating from around 1880, the painting reveals Ten Cate’s early fascination with modern life, movement and changing light—subjects that would remain central to his work throughout his career. The result is both an intimate record of life aboard a nineteenth-century steamship and a strikingly modern study of colour, matter and atmosphere.

"Steam Trawlers"

"Steam Trawlers"

By Henry Bayley Snell

Located in Lambertville, NJ

Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Henry Bayley Snell (1858 - 1943) Henry Bayley Snell was born in Richmond, England, on September 29, 1858 and immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen. He studied at the Art Students League in New York while working for an etching and engraving company where he began a lifelong friendship with fellow artists, William Langson Lathrop. While in New York Snell met another artist, named Florence Francis, also of English descent, whom he would eventually marry in 1888. It is believed that they first came to Bucks County in 1898 to visit the Lathrops at Phillips Mill. Snell was a beloved teacher at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women from 1899 to 1943, and often took his art classes abroad during the summer. He would frequently visit his native England, spending time at the art colony of St. Ives on the coast of Cornwall. Snell would summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where he also held painting classes. Almost all the women who exhibited with “The Philadelphia Ten” had studied with Snell either in Philadelphia or New England. Snell also taught on Saturdays at the Grand Central Galleries in New York City. The Snells made many trips to New Hope before settling there permanently in 1925. They lived on the top floor of the Solebury National Bank Building where Henry also maintained a studio. This was located at the foot of the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge and many of Snell’s New Hope scenes were painted from this location. In 1943, Snell passed away in New Hope at the age of eighty-four. Henry Snell earned an international reputation as an artist for his paintings of Cornwall...
