Suhas Roy - Radha - 11.5 x 13.5 inches (unframed size) Pastel on Board, 2008 Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Suhas Roy's mystic woman which he calls 'Radha', either Pastel on paper or Oil on canvas or soft coloured pastel on Paper are a series of work where he sees an ethereal mystic godlike and innocent spirit in every woman he meets. Style : He is one of the biggest and the most enduring names in the genre of Indian modern art. Often dubbed the father of female figurative forms. Radha Series and the Christ Series in soft pastel on paper and intense Oil on canvas paintings. Consequently, his recent body of works, "Drops of Silence", executed in oil, pastels and pen-and-ink etchings on backdrops in watercolours, are all studies of "mysterious slightly surreal nude women floating in a void". Roy's forte is Radhika - dark, enigmatic, beautiful Indian women with the slightest smile and ethereal in its quality. About the Artist & his work : Born : 1936, Bangladesh. Education : 1953-58 Diploma in Painting, Indian College of Art and Draughtsmanship, Calcutta. 1956-66 Studied graphic art under the guidance of S.W. Hayter, Atelier 17 and mural art at cole Superior Des Beaux Art, Paris. Exhibitions : His works have been exhibited all over the world through exhibitions like the Asian Graphic Prints Traveling Exhibition, USA, the Tokyo Print Biennale, Japan, Contemporary Indian Art, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungry, and Wounds, at the Central Institute Modern Art, New Delhi, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. It was purchased by a Private Dallas Collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 18th September 2008. Lot No. 74. Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September. This sale was titled “Modern & Contemporary Indian Art”. The Lot consisted of a Group of 3 Watercolors by Babu Xavier, Paresh Maity and Ranjit Kurmi. (b.1960, b.1965, b.1970) Three Untitled Works. Signed and dated ‘Paresh Maity ’02 lower right, watercolor and ink on paper. …. 5.6 x 3.6 (14 x 9 cm)”. Exhibited: Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Modern Indian Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, April 8 – June 11 2006. The Provenance is given as: “Property of Private Maryland Collectors”. The 3 watercolors carried an Auction estimate of USD 3,000 to USD 4,000 and Sold for USD 4,000 (not including Buyers Premium). Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $7,000 in today’s value. We have this watercolor by Paresh Maity and (listed separately) the Babu Xavier watercolor, but not the Ranjit Kurmi watercolor. As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label. It has substantially increased in value over the years as a HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece from an exhibited and highly collected Modern Indian Master painter.
