Avalokitesvara meaning the lord who looks down is also known as Lokesvara (Lord of the World). He is known as Chenrezig in Tibetan. He is a tenth level Bodhisattva associated with Amitabh Buddha who has a great compassion (Mahakaruna). Avalokitesvara has numerous manifestations and is depicted in various forms and styles. One of it is a form with a thousand arms and eleven heads. One prominent Buddhist story tells of Avalokitesvara vowing never to rest until he had freed all sentient beings from Samsara (world). Despite strenuous effort, he realizes that many unhappy beings were yet to be saved. After struggling to comprehend the needs of so many his head splits into eleven pieces. Upon seeing his plight Amitabha gave him eleven heads with which to hear the cries of the suffering. Upon hearing those cries and comprehending them, Avalokitesvara tries to reach out to all those who needed aid but found that his two arms shattered into pieces. Once more Amitabh came to his aid and gave him a thousand arms so that he can reach out to multitude suffering beings in Samsara. This is how Avalokitesvara got a thousand arms and eleven heads form. Avalokitesvara’s mantra is “Om Mani Padme Hum” which is the most popular mantra in Buddhism.
