About the Item

French painter (18th century) - Flute Player and Dog. 43.5 x 35 cm (without frame), 54 x 45 cm (with frame). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. The scene depicts a young flute player in eighteenth-century costume, a ribbon-trimmed tricorn hat, red coat, and white stockings, standing beside a seated young woman who holds a small dog on a leash. In the background, an open hilly landscape and an architectural element covered in foliage. The composition, palette, and rendering of the costumes are consistent with French genre painting of the 18th century, within the Rococo tradition associated with Boucher and Lancret.
