About the Item

Framed Size: 50 1/4 x 38 inches Vaclav Vytlacil figurative abstraction, tempera on panel — "Blue Note" is a richly layered 1967 work that exemplifies the artist's signature synthesis of Cubist spatial logic and Expressionistic color. Against a vibrant cobalt ground, interlocking angular forms suggest figures in motion, evoking both the energy of jazz and the visual dynamism that defined Vytlacil's mature style. The composition is alive with warm ochres, burnt oranges, blacks, and whites, applied with confident, gestural authority. The work is presented framed and in excellent condition. Vaclav Vytlacil (1892–1984) was an American painter, printmaker, and art educator who became one of the most influential figures in the development of American abstraction. Known for his distinctive figurative abstractions, he was inspired by Paul Cézanne and the teachings of Hans Hofmann, producing works that addressed both his motifs and the painted surface on its own terms. After years of teaching and study in Europe, he returned permanently to the United States in 1935 and went on to teach at the Art Students League, Black Mountain College, Queens College, and the Art Institute of Chicago — counting Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, and Louise Bourgeois among his students. He was also a co-founder of the American Abstract Artists group. His work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Blue Note" dates from the height of Vytlacil's late career, when his command of pictorial space and color was fully realized. Works from this period are relatively rare and highly sought by collectors of mid-century American modernism. Signed and dated 1967 lower center. From a private collection.
