About the Item

Division of the Spoils in a Military Encampment Entourage of Willem Cornelisz. Duyster (Amsterdam 1599 – 1635) Not signed. Dutch school, late 17th – early 18th century Oil on oak panel Dimensions: H 37.5 cm × W 63 cm Brigands or soldiers? The uniforms suggest military order, the gestures evoke looting. In a makeshift camp, armed men divide a luxurious spoils – silverware, embroidered fabrics, jewels – examining each item one by one, like animated still-life objects. A standing officer oversees the scene, while those around him move quickly, silently, caught between discipline and desire. This subject belongs to the Dutch tradition of military scenes, particularly those associated with Willem Cornelisz. Duyster. The composition echoes a well-known prototype, Interior with Soldiers Dividing the Spoils (c. 1625–30), which was widely reproduced in later decades. Known versions are held at Luton Hoo (Wernher Collection, RKD), the William Benton Museum of Art (signed “WD”), the former Koenigs Collection (as noted by Hofstede de Groot), and appeared in sales at Christie’s (1969, Van Alen Collection) and Sotheby’s New York (1979). The horizontal format is used to full narrative effect, guiding the viewer’s eye through a scene structured like a silent drama. The rendering of materials – metal, textiles, weapons – reflects the refined detail typical of Dutch painting from the late 17th century. The painting has not been recorded in public collections or auction records and likely remained for a long time in a private collection. Condition: Original oak panel, horizontal format, uncradled. The painted surface shows a stable and consistent craquelure, light abrasions at the edges, and some old retouching. Structurally sound and visually well preserved.

We do not know under whom our painter studied. Seeing the Flemish character of his work, some scholars believe that he could have studied in Flanders, in Antwerp. Droochsloot was a versatile and productive painter. The central museum in his hometown of Utrecht holds 15 of his paintings, showing the diversity of his work, many other museums exhibit his works Our painting represents a scene that took place during the Eighty Years' War. This Dutch War of Independence from Spain was a long, slow war that lasted from 1568 to 1648. The war began with a Protestant uprising in Flanders and Holland against the Spanish...

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy

By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)

Located in Riva del Garda, IT

After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
