About the Item

This artwork depicts a rural landscape of the Bourbonnais. In the foreground, on the left bottom corner, a Charolais cow is laying in the shadow. Just behind, another cow is grazing tall grass in the meadow. The hill is rising up on the left, where old trees reply to younger trees on the right bottom corner. Fields, forests, mountains and houses are visible far away. A farmer is leading a third cow below the hill, on a road overhanging a lake. This artwork is unusual in Yves Calméjane artistic production by its size, only two pieces currently being this large. Although both are completely independant, they were made in a row and may favorably be arranged as a diptych. The other artwork in question is "Charolais Cows". This piece is not framed. It is delivered rolled, it will have to be mounted on a (strong !) chassis by a professional framer. Yves Calméjane usually uses light impasto techniques, with the weft of the canvas often still visible. The reliefs are quite thin, the painting often spread out, with frank touches on some parts of the canvas. The color palette is soft, with very elaborate tones, no rough paint from the tube. Calméjane doesn't try to embellish the colors : although an impressionist he has a very realistic approach in terms of colors and ambiances, which can on some paintings give an impression of austerity. This is not the case on this one, though : although very sober, the lighting is very soft. Calméjane always paints his landscapes in situ. The canvas has been prepared and stretched by the artist himself, with skin glue. The artist always use renowned brands for his color tubes, with quality pigments. The canvas is not completely covered by paint, there are a few spots where the (brown) canvas is naked. Yves Calméjane is a French impressionist artist, mostly influenced by Auguste Chabaud and Jean Arène.
