This work brings together a range of elements that emerge against a backdrop washed in pale pink and yellow hues. At the forefront stands a turquoise figure, framed by vivid red and green foliage. All of the artist’s series are deeply interconnected; he views each one as a natural progression of the last. The GARDENS series continues his exploration of the significance of art and its constant presence in everyday life, following the path established by his earlier works. By depicting ordinary, familiar objects, he reveals the visual richness of reality and encourages the viewer to recognize artistic potential in the world around them. This series highlights female nudes intertwined with lush motifs of plants, leaves, and flowers. In some pieces, the artist introduces a new emblem—the heart—which adds a clear reference to love within his vibrant universe. “What were once inflatable dolls in his previous works have now become real women, depicted with soft curves and flowing hair—a kind of Eve inhabiting Šimunović’s paradisiacal gardens. […] Alongside these figures, his familiar motifs return, inviting viewers to interpret their meanings and the relationships that unfold within each painting. […] When wandering through Zoran’s creative worlds and gardens, one never knows what may appear—but it always surprises and delights.” — Valentina Bach For Zoran Šimunović, art is above all an act of play and joy. His outlook on life is intensely optimistic, and through his work he aims to evoke positive emotions or warm personal memories in the viewer. To achieve this, he uses sophisticated combinations of bright, inviting colours. He draws inspiration from his surroundings and from simple objects that make up his daily life: toys, fruits, furniture, plants… These seemingly ordinary yet meaningful items spark his curiosity and imagination, finding their way into his paintings. “Some of the things I paint come from my childhood, others are from more recent times. Their age doesn’t matter. What matters is the emotion they awaken in me. Sometimes it’s difficult for artists to reveal their intimacy to the world, but I don’t have that problem. Perhaps it’s because I’m always happy with my paintings—they give me pleasure and happiness, and I hope they have the same effect on the audience.” Through a distinctive and harmonious blend of figurative subjects and abstract elements, Zoran constructs imaginary, poetic worlds filled with symbolic connections waiting to be decoded. These narrative and introspective works convey his memories, emotions, and dreams, while simultaneously resonating with viewers through the personal interpretations they inspire. The exhibition view is taken from Zoran Šimunović’s solo show “Gimme a Kiss”, held in 2025 at the Klovićevi dvori Gallery in Zagreb, Croatia.
