About the Item

Illustration for the “Grant Centennial Souvenir Section” of the Philadelphia newspaper Evening Public Ledger, published April 27, 1922, pages 32-33. The illustration depicts the swearing in of Ulysses S. Grant as an honorary member the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) on May 16, 1877. Occurring shortly after he left the presidency and just one day before he embarked on a world tour, the intimate ceremony took place at Philadelphia's Public Ledger in the office of the newspaper’s owner, George W. Childs, who was a close friend of Grant and can be seen standing in the doorway. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization formed in 1866 for Union veterans of the American Civil War, a group whose support played a significant role in Grant’s presidential elections. He was inducted into Philadelphia’s General George G. Meade Post No. 1 and was presented with a membership badge that he reportedly wore with pride during his subsequent travels abroad. The published caption reads: “General Grant, President, sworn in as a member of Post No.1, G.A.R., in the office of George W. Childs of the Public Ledger. Childs stands in the doorway. This was just before Grant’s trip around the world.” Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Left Year: (circa) 1922 Dimensions: 35" x 40"
