About the Item

Eighteenth Century English Country Inn Scene with Rustic Figures and Dog, drinking and talking in the Village Pub A signed Oil on Canvas mounted on stretchers and Framed in a Morland Frame. This was once the property of the eminent British Surgeon Sir Geoffrey Keynes, also famous for being patron of the William Blake Society. A humorous and skilful Scene by probably the most famous Eighteenth Century Painter, known as a child prodigy and famed throughout the Country for his realistic portrayals of Village Life and Working Folk. Time to settle the Bill" by George Morland (1763-1804) Oil on Canvas, Signed and Framed 20 by 22 inches George Morland the famed Eighteenth Century Painter is best known for his compositions that focus on rustic characters, farming, smugglers and gypsies, informed by the Dutch tradition. As famous for his dissolute lifestyle as much as his genius. Morland was a heavy drinker and despite his great success he had many troubles and much of his later years were marred by debt and he spent time in a debtor's prison. His father initially cultivated his prodigious talents, indeed it could be said he took great advantage of him. There is little doubt that from the earliest years he showed great talent and all through his life painted prolifically. He often tossed out a painting in the day to support an evening's drinking and was a great favourite with the Dealers for both the quality of his work and eagerness. It was often said that dealers approached him with money in one hand and a bottle in the other!

Charles Hunt Jnr British, (1829-1900) A Visitor Calls Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 24.75 inches x 34.75 inches Size including frame: 32.25 inches x 42.25 inches A wonderful genre painting by Charles Hunt of two men and two boys with horses and other animals in a cottage. A farmer and his two sons can be seen eating lunch at a table in rustic interior as a visitor approaches. Perhaps encouraged by the boys, a piglet seems to have found its way onto the table whilst a rabbit and guinea pig eat cabbage leaves on the floor. To the far right, a horse is shown in a stable area along with some piglets. To the far left, a terrier waits on the step by its master. Charles Hunt was a genre and figure painter born in Kensington, London in 1829. His sons Reuben Hunt...
