Set against an expansive yellow field, a cluster of white farmhouses stands at ease near the horizon. The scene whispers of silence, space, and distance. The composition exudes both an isolating and calm atmosphere.
About the Artist
Artist Ruth LaGue paints pastoral landscapes and architecture pared down to their barest forms. By providing the most minimal visual cues, she invokes rather than details—adjusting the placement of the horizon line in her paintings, suggesting a range of natural formations. "I am particularly drawn to the interplay between colors and textures in defining spaces," says Ruth. Growing up in an artistic family in Alaska, she has always been encouraged to be creatively curious. Ruth found an indelible connection between the vast, wild landscape of her childhood and the limitless internal landscape of the soul as she traveled through India. The concepts of her practice as a graphic designer and creative director—with a focus on user-centric design—carry over to build a strong foundation for her current work, stretching form, line, and color to their limits. She works at her home studio in Massachusetts with her two Havanese dogs, Rikki and Owen, keeping her company. When she's not painting, Ruth enjoys working the computer, reading, and watching The Great British Bake Off.
